What will happen when I use one of the Ged2X services?
The exact sequence of processing steps depends on the service you are using, but in general your Gedcom file is uploaded to the Ged2X web site, where it is processed. If you are not hosting your family tree on the Ged2X web site then a compressed file will be returned to you, which you can then uncompress and store on your computer
What sort of files are returned after processing if I am not using the hosting option?
You can choose either a zip file or a gzipped tar file to be returned to you. In both cases this is a compressed archive containing one or more files and folders. You should save this file to your hard disk or other storage media, and then uncompress it using third-party software, such as WinZip on a Windows system. If you are using a Linux system, there is probably software already installed for compressing and uncompressing archives of this type.
Will you keep a copy of the data that I upload?
No permanent copy of your uploaded data is kept by the Ged2X web site.
What are the advantages of processing my data remotely on the Ged2X web site?
The main advantage is that you don't have to bother with installing software on your own machine. This can often be a complex process and may take up a lot of resources on your machine. Also you don't need to install updates every time a new version of the software is released - the version that you access remotely through the web site is always the most up-to-date. Remote processing may also be faster than using your own machine, though this depends on how fast your machine is and the network bandwidth.
What are the disadvantages of processing my data remotely on the Ged2X web site?
The main disadvantage is that you must be online to use the services. Also your data travels unencrypted over the Internet and so may be intercepted or modified by others. Finally, you have to trust Ged2X to handle your data confidentially.
